Jixi, one of the major coal centers in northeast China's Heilongjiang province, has outlined a plan to develop industrial chains in coal, electricity and coal chemicals.
A number of large coal, coal-fired power and coal-chemical projects begun in recent years will help the city to realize its goal to become a new type of coal-based industrial city, local government officials said.
The city has approved 32 key coal and electricity projects to date that brought a combined investment of about 57 billion yuan.
Among them, 11 coal expansion and renovation projects by China National Coal Group Corp, Jixi Coal Mine Group Co Ltd, Shenyang Coal Trade Group and Jidong Baotailong Coking Co will be completed by 2010, helping increase the annual coal production capacity to more than 10 million tons for the city.
Jixi has discovered new coal reserves of 6.5 billion tons, the largest in Heilongjiang.
Construction will begin this year on a 24.59 billion yuan coal chemical project in Yongqing, the largest of its kind in Heilongjiang. Scheduled for operation by the end of 2011, the project is the result of an agreement signed last May between the Heilongjiang provincial government and China National Coal Group Corp.
Expansion of a 1.3 billion yuan coal tailings-fired electricity generating facility funded by Jixi Coal Mine Group Co Ltd has also been approved by the central government.
Over the last 29 years, Jixi Coal Mine Group has consumed coal tailings of up to 19 million tons to produce electricity of 6.55 billion kilowatt hours.
The expansion will help the group produce 1.48 billion kWh of electricity annually.
Local government officials said that expansion of coal, electricity and coal chemical industries will help boost development of mechanical manufacturing, metallurgy, new construction and nonmetal materials, chemicals, food processing and infrastructure in the city.
